Before the Conquest Frampton was held by Ernesi, and in 1086 Drew son of Pons held it of the king; Roger de Lacy also held 1 hide there unjustly. [Dom. Bk. (Rec. Com.), i. 168v] Frampton later passed to Drew's nephew, Walter son of Richard son of Pons; Walter, who assumed the surname Clifford, [A. Clifford, Collectanea Cliffordiana (Paris, 1817); Rudder, Glos. 452.] made the grant mentioned above of the mill at Frampton c. 1180, and his son [Godstow Reg. p. 135] confirmed Frampton to his younger brother Richard de Clifford in 1200, to hold it of Walter. [Bigland, Glos. i. 595 n;] Richard held the manor of Frampton at his death in or before 1213, when Walter made fine for the custody of the land and heirs of his brother Richard. [Rot. de Ob. et Fin. (Rec. Com.), 485] Another Richard de Clifford*, son and heir of Richard, was in possession by 1236 [Bracton's Notebook, ed. Maitland, iii, p. 170; Bk. of Fees, i. 441; cf. C.P. 25 (1)/73/12/215.] and possibly ten years earlier. [Glos. R.O., D 149/T 101].

Frampton on Severn. - Richard, Duke of Normandy, had issue William Earl of Angus, in Normandy, surnamed Pons, according to some authorities, who had issue Richard, Drogo (who held this M. t. W. Conq.) and Osbert; Richard, the eldest son, gave two virgates in Frampton to the Templars, which Roger de Cantelo held for 20s. rent, [Monast. Anglic, ji. p. 530] a name which continued here long afterwards, for William de Clifford, of Frampton, is witness to an alienation of lands in the neighbourhood of Winchcombe, by Margery, wife of Roger de Cantelue, of this place. [Reg. Magn. Abb. de Winchc. f, 150.] Richard, had issue Walter 1st Lord Clifford, who had issue Walter and Richard 2^nd son, who had this Manor of Frampton. This Walter Clifford gave to Godstowe Nunnery for the health of his soul, and of hie wife Margaret and his daughter Rosamond, his mill of Frampton, except his own toll, and the meadow of Lichten, fife.; and Richard Clifford, his son, gave the toll of his own household, [Reg. Abb. De Godstoe, MS. Cott. Jul. C.vii]. The Sheriff was ordered to postpone the scutage he required of Richard de Clifford, with the King in foreign parts, for one fee in Frampton, and that it be delayed until the King returned. [Fin. 27 Hen III] William de Clifford next paid two marks for one fee in Frampton; which Richard de Clifford held. [MS. Cott.Jul.C.i.] Richard of Frampton, son of Walter, before, was father of Sir Hugh, father of Sir John (also father of Sir Richard), who left daughter Isabella wife of Robert Fitzpayne, son of Roger, by Margaret sister and coheir of Alured de Lincoln, [Dugdale's Baronage, i. 573] sole surviving sister and heir.
