• Background Information. 141 John de Segrave, Lord Segrave, son and heir, was aged 10 at his father's death. On 3 Mar1326/7 his wardship and marriage were given to Thomas, Earl of Norfolk. On 20 Mar 1335/6 he was granted seisin, having proved his age and done homage; 24 Sep 1336, staying in Scotland on the King's service; 10 Jul 1340, in a commission, co. Leicester. On 10 Mar 1345/6 he is mentioned as heir to Nicholas, Lord Segrave (of Stowe); and in September 1349, as heir to John de Segrave of Folkestone; 30 Jun 1350, with his wife outlawed for non-appearance; 4 Aug 1350 he appointed an attorney to act for him in Ireland.
John de Segrave married Margaret, daughter and eventually sole heir of Thomas (of Brotherton), Earl of Norfolk and Marshal of England, by his 1st wife Alice, daughter of Sir Rogerde Hales; which Thomas, who died s.p.m. 1338, was 5th son of Edward I. He died s.p.m. 1 Apr 1353. Margaret survived her husband; and was created, 29 Sep 1397, Duchess of Norfolk for life.
