• Background Information. 141 Sir John de Mowbray, Lord Mowbray, son and heir by 1st wife, Joan, was b. 25 June 1340, at Epworth. He was a witness at Leicester with his father in the Spring of 1355, and was knight in July when the King was with his fleet in the Downs on his way to an invasion of France; next year he served in the Brittany campaign. He had livery of his inheritance 14 Nov 1361. He was summoned to Parliment from 14 Aug 1362 to 20 Jan 1365/6. On 10 Oct 1367, as "John de Mowray of Axholme, chivaler," he nominated attorneys on going beyond seas by the King's licence.
Sir John de Mowbray married, circa 1349, Elizabeth, daughter and eventually heir, of John de Segrave, Lord Segrave, by Margaret, eldest daughter and eventually heir of Thomas de Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk and Marshal of England. Elizabeth was born 25 Oct 1338, at Croxton Abbey, and proved her age in Sep 1353, and is said to have become Baroness Segrave on her father's death, 1 Apr 1353. Elizabeth predeceased her husband. John, Lord Mowbray died in 1368, being slain by Saracens. His will was proved at Lincoln, 17 May 1369.
