Hugh (de Courtenay), Lord Courtenay, son and heir apparent, was, 23 April 1337, summoned to Parliament v.p., by writ directed Hugoni de Courteney juniori. In 1340 he succeeded his father as Earl of Devon. He died 2 May 1377.

Hugh de Courtenay, Earl of Devon & Lord Courteny, son and heir, born 12 Jul 1303; served in the Scottish and French wars; Knight Banneret 20 Jan 1327; repulsed the French descent on Cornwall 1339; was summoned v.p. to Parliament 23 Apr 1337 by writ directed Hugoni de Courieney juniori, whereby he is held to have become Lord Courtenay, but succeeded to the Earldom three years afterwards. He had livery 11 Jan 1340/1. He made, by license. of Edward III, an extensive entail in tail male of his lands. He attended the tournament held at Lichfield, 9 Apr 1347, as one of the Knights of the King's Chamber. He was joint Warden of Devon and Cornwall 1352; Chief Warden of Devon 1373.

Sir Hugh de Courteney, Baron of Devon, married, 11 August 1325 (Cont. 27 September 1314), Margaret, 1^st surviving daughter of Humphrey de Bohn, Earl of Hereford and Essex, by Elizabeth, daughter of Edward I. Sir Hugh de Courteney died 2 May 1377, aged 73, and was buried in Exeter Cathedral. His widow (by whom he had 8 sons and 9 daughters) died 16 December 1391, and was also buried there.
