He was a large landowner in west England, including Shute, co. Devon, and Sock Dennis, Somerset. He was a member of Parliment eight times form Somerset and twelve times for Devon, sheriff of Somerset and Dorset in 1380-81, and sheriff of Devon in 1389 and 1400.
Sir William Bonville married, as his first wife, Margaret Daumarle, born about 1347, died in 1399 and daughter and coheir of Sir William Daumarle (of de Albemarle) of Woodbury and Lympstone, co. Devon, and Middle Chynnock, Somerset. Sir William Daumarle died in 1361. His wife and the mother of Margaret Daumarle. was Agnes de Meriet.

Sir William married as his second wife, a widow named Alice, who had been previously married three time, her first husband being John Fitz Roger of Chewton, by whom she had her only child, a daughter named Elizabeth.
