• Background Information. 772 Robert de Sherburne is the first member of the Lancashire-Yorkshire family. He is first mentioned in 1246. Nothing is know about him except that he married Matilda, sister of Adam de Catford, son of Adam "filius Swani aliter dict. Adam De Catford," son of Swanius of Carlton Magna, or Pulton in Lanchashire. He died 45 Henry III (1260-1261), leaving a son John de Sherburne.

• Background Information. 822 Robert Shireburn, in 29 Henry III, held the manor of Hambledon by gift of his grandfather, and he is again on record in the 40th year of the same reign (1244-1256). He married Matilda, daughter of Adam de Catforth, and sister of another. The Catforth family were also known by the name of Carlton, from Carlton Magna (Great Carlton) in the Fylde or champaign country of North Lancashire. Their son was John Shireburn, who is recorded in 40 henry III.
