Information about this person:
• Background Information. 772 Richard de Sherburne and others held a fourth part of a knight's fee in Wiswall and Hapton for the render of 25 shillings according to an inquisition taken after the death of Henry, Duke of Lancaster, in 1362. From the Records of the Duchy of Lancaster [1362, div. xxvi., bund. 43, part 1, P.R.O] it is known that he held lands by military tenure at various places in Lancashire and the value of such lands. Another inquisition in 1365 shows that Sir Richard, Knight, had free chace appertaining to the manor of Wiswall. While he was a knight, his grandfather, Sir Robert, and his father, Sir John, were also knights. This is somewhat unusal.
Sir Richard was married in 1351 to Alice, daughter of Sir William Plumpton, who survived him and married Johannes de Botilier of Warrington after the death of Sir Richard. Richard and Alice did not leave a male child, so the line of Sherburnes passes on two their daughters, Margaret and Johanna, coheiresses. Johanna appears to have died unmarried, but Margaret married about 1379 to Richard de Bayley de Stonyhurst, who died during the life of his father John de Bayley.
