John Lister

In this book the descent of John Lister, who married Isabel Bolton, is from the de Granville family who came to England from Normandy, and later were called de Leicester. Of the Norman family, Roger de Geneville gave the Church of Pictarville c. 1000 to St Taurin Abbey, Evereux, Normand [Gall. Christ. Xi. P. 139 Instr.]. His decendants came to England in 1066, and of them was Hugh de Janville, Viscount of Leicester, who was in England during the reign of Henry I. He witnessed a charter of Lenton Priory about 1100-1108. He was Viscount of Leicester, 1130, and Senschal to Matilda de Senlis [Rot. Pip.' Mon. I, p. 672].

The son of Hugh de Geneville was named Ivo de Leicester, who was living in 1130 [Rot. Pip.] The family became very wide spread. In the same century Odo de Leicester and Ralph de Leicester gave land in Normandy to Plessis Priory [MSAN, viii. pp. 156, 157]. William de Granville was a member of Parliament for Leicestershire in 1322, and is documented as "William de Leicester." Roger de Leicester, also of this family, possessed estates in Leicestershire during the reign of Richard I. He was the son of Robert de Leicester, who witnessed a charter of Salop Abbey, circa 1170, and was a son of Ivo de Leicester.

Roger de Leicester, 1190, witnessed the charter of Cokersand, Lancashire [Mon. ii. p. 631], was living in Lancashire around 1200 when paid a fine in Leicester [Hardy, Obl. et Fin.] From this line descended the Lyster of Rowton, Salop. Roger had two grandsons. One was Sir Nicholas of Lancashire, who acquired Tabley, Cheshire, and was the ancestor of the Leicesters of Tabley. The second grandson, Thomas, was father of (1) Geoffry de Leicester, a member of parliament for Derby in 1311 and (2) John of Derby. This John of Derby, in 1321, obtained a pardon as an adherent of Roger Mortimer, of Wigmore, and to whom in 1311, the Abbot of Salop was commanded by the king to make a payment of 20£. He married Isabel, daughter and heir of John de Bolton of Bolton, Lancashire, and had a son named Richard Leicester, whose son John inherited the estates in Craven from the de Boltons, and was ancestor of William Lister, Lord of Midhope Craven, ancestor of the Listers, Barons of Ribblesdale.

John married Isabel Bolton, daughter of John de Bolton and Eve, wife of John de Bolton, in 1312 in England.⁷⁵² (Isabel Bolton died after 1379 in Derby, Derbyshire, England ¹⁵⁸.)
