• Dates & Events.
In 1179, Louis became the first king of France to visit England, making a pilgrimage to Canterbury to pray for St. Thomas Becket's help in curing his son. Louis spent a night at Becket's tomb, and made several offerings. One, the "Regale of France", was considered the finest gem in Europe and several centuries later was appropriated by King Henry VIII, who wore it on his thumb.

Louis VII was first married to Eleanor of Aquitaine at Bordeaux, 22 Jul 1137 and they were divorced 21 Mar 1152. Their two daughters were:

Marie of France, married to Henry I, Count of Champagne, son of Theobald IV, Count of Blois and Champagne, and the brother of Stephen, King of England.

Alix of France, married Theobald V, Count of Blois, son of Theobald IV, and brother of Henry I, husband of Alix's sister Marie.

Louis VII married, as his second wife Constance of Castile, daughter of Alfonso VII, King of Castile and Leon and his wife Berengaria of Barcelona. They married at Orleans in 1143/4. Children of Louis VII and Constance were:

Margarite of France married Henry, the son of Henry II, King of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Margarite married, as her second husband, Béla III of Hungary.

Alix of France, married William count of Ponthieu. They had a daughter, Marie, who married Simón de Dammartin, Comté de Aumale, son of Alberic II. The daughter of Marie and Simón, Joanna, married, as her first husband Ferdinand III, King of Castile and Leon, the son of Alfonso IX, King of Leon and his wife Berengaria of Castile. Berengaria was the daughter of Eleanor of England and granddaughter of Henry II, King of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Louis VII, married a third time to Adela of Champagne and Blois on 13 Nov 1160. Adela was the daughter of Theobald IV, Comté de Champagne et Blois, and Matilda of Carinthia. The children of Louis VII and his wife Adela were:

Philip II Augustus, married to Isabella of Hainault, daughter of Baldwin VIII, count of Hainault and Namur and his second wife, Margaret of Flanders. His second wife was Ingeborg of Denmark, daughter of Waldemar I, King of Denmark and Sophie of Polotsk. His third wife was Agnes of Meran, daugher of Berthold VI, Duke of Meran, and his wife Agnes of Wettin-Rochlitz.

Agnes of France, married to Alexius II Comneus, Byzantine Emperor, son of Manuel I and his wife, Mary, daughter of Raymond of Antioch.

Louis next married Aliénor de Aquitaine, daughter of Guillaume "le Jeune" Duc de Aquitaine et VIII Comté de Poitou and Aénor de Châtellerault, in 1137 in Bordeaux, Aquitaine, France.160 (Aliénor de Aquitaine was born in 1120-1122 in Château de Belin, Gironde, died 31 Mar or 1 Apr 1204 in Fontévrault Abbey, Anjou 160 and was buried in Abbaye de Fontévrault, Fontevrault 160.)
