• Background Information. 784 Sir Richard married Joan, second daughter of William de Colewick, of Colewick, Nottinghamshire and sister of Thomas de Colewick, who was two years old at the death of his father in 35 Edward III. With this marriage, came a considerable estate since William Colewick was married to Joan, daughter and heir of John Peche, and his wife, Alice, the daughter and hier of Sir William Hayward, Knight, by Joan his wife, daughter and heir of Sir Saier de Huntingfield of South-Stoke.

• Background Information. 1110 In 1280, a jury found that Reginald de Colwick, grandfather of William, lived a hundred years, and that he and Philip, his son & father of William, had their part enclosed with hedge and ditch at their pleasure.
In 1296, another William de Colwick was summoned under the general writ to perform military service in person with horses and arms in Scotland, the muster being held at Nottingham on 7 Jul 1297. This was the ill-fated force suffered defeat at the hands of Sir William Wallace. Sir William de Colwick survived, for he represented the county as a Knight of the Shire in Parliament from 1296 until 1301.
Sir William died in 1362, leaving a son named Thomas de Colwick, and a daughter, Joan de Colwick. Thomas died without issue, ad the estate went the Byron family via Joan de Colwick who married, as his second wife, Sir Richard Byron, of Clayton, Lancashire.
