• Background Information. 926 Gruffudd ab Madog, Prince of Powys Fadog, also styled Lord of Dinas Bran,succeeded his father to all the lordships that his father had in 1236. Price Gruffudd married an English landy, Emma, daughter of James, Lord Audley. After this marriage, Prince Gruffudd sided with Henry III against Prince Llywelyn ab Gruffudd, yet submitted to Prince Llywelyn later. He was obliged to confine himself to his castle of Dinas Bran where he died in 1270, and was buried in the church of Valle Crucis Abbey.
Gryffydd ap Madog and Emma had four sons: Madog Fychan; Llywelyn, Lord of Chirk & Nanheudwy, died without issue; Gruffudd, surnamed Y Barwn Gwyn or "the White Baron," who had the lordships of Glyndyfrdwy and Ial; and Owain, who was a learned scholar, "ysgolhaig urddasol," who died young and without issue.
