• Background Information: 745 Robert de Radcliffe, heir of his father, succeeded to Oswaldtwistle, Hartshead, and Tottington in addition to the capital manor. The Tottington lands were later seized by Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln, as part of the Montbegon fee when the Montbegon lands were alienated at death of Sir Robert de Montbegon. Robert married Amabil, daughter of Sir Richard de Trafford, and she bore him three sons and a daughter. Robert died in 1290.

Richard, eldest son and heir.
Roger, second son, married a daughter of Robert Bradshaw of Harwood about 1291, and to him Sir Robert granted certain lands in Bradshaw. He is referred to as Roger "Senior" in a deed of 1326.
Adam, third son, married Avice, daughter of Hugh de Birchwood, by whom he had a duaghter and heiress, Alice who married to John, son of Henry de Hulton. To Adam, Sir John la Warre granted, in 1326, 24 acres of land and wood called Harpurhey, lying next to the pale of his park of Blackley, with remained to Alice, daughter of Adam. The estate descended in the family of the Hultons of Farnworth.
Margaret, only daughter of Robert was married to Richard de Hulton of Hulton Park, the heir of David de Hulton. Richard was a nortable figure in the Scottish wars, wherein he served as Captain, together with Margaret's brother Richard de Radclyffe. In 1304, Edward I, granted to Hulton free warren and free chace in his demesne lands of Hulton, Ordsall and Flixton, and a similar grant was made at the same time to Richard de Radclyffe. Richard de Hulton died in 1312 leaving a son and heir of the same name. In 1315, Margaret was married a second time to Geoffrey de Chadderton, and from this marriage the Radclyffes of Chadderton descended. Geoffrey de Chadderton died in 1320 and Margaret outlived both her husbands.

• Background Information: 1530a The parish of Radcliffe, in Salford hundred, doubtless gave name to the family of Radcliffe before that lace was in the possession of the Earls of Chester. In the record of fees held in the reigns of John and Henry III., as exhibited in the Testa de Nevvill, William de Radeclive occurs in the Inquisicio Comitatus Lancastr', [fo. 401-405], where he is said to hold by 6s. a carucate of land of the fee of Ranulf Fitz-Roger's heir, a ward in the custody of Eustace Fitz-Moreton, for the king, besides twelve bovates of land in Edgworth.
In 30 Henry III. (1246), Adam, son of the William de Radeclive above named, petitioned a against Roger de Oswaldtwisel for the lands demised in Radclive, for a term of years, by his grandfather, of whom he was the heir. In 4 Edward I. (1276) Richard, son of Robert and great grandson of William de Radclyve, had a writ of novel disseisin, and held lands, &c., in Tottington, of the fee of Roger de Montebegon. This Richard accompanied the king in his wars in Scotland, and obtained from him a charter for free warren in his manors of Radcliffe and Querndone, dated from Strevelin, 32 Edward I. (1304). [Rot.
