• Background Information: 580 There is almost no records of William Penn the second, except for his father's will, and a letter sent to Admiral William Penn by a barrister named Mr. Georges. It it Georges says,"And to the end that you and yours may be truly informed . . . how I make my title to it, you may please to know that your grandfather, William Penn (whose name you bear) was by your great-grandfather (of the same name also) places with my great uncle, Christopher Georges, then cousellor-at-law, to be bred up by him, and with whom he lived many years as his chief clerk, till he married him to one of his sisters Ann Georges' daughter by Mr. John Rastall, then one of the aldermen of Gloucester, . . . By which pedigree it many appear to you that your father were cousin-german but onced removed."
Of the six children of William, the law clerk, the only one there is much information on is Giles, his second son.

• Background Information: 1595 William Penn, son of William Penne of Minety, and grandson of John Penne of the same place, was apprenticed as a law-clerk to the counsellor-at-law, Christopher George of Bawnton, near Cirencester, eventually becomeing his cheif clerk. William married, sometime before 1570, Margaret Rastall, daughter of John Rastall, Alderman of Gloucester, and his wife Anne George, sister of Christopher.
William and his wife apparently settled in Malmesbury, four or five miles southwest of Minety. In the Malmesbury Subsidy Rolls of 1570/1 (13 Elizabeth I, William was taxed six shillings on his movable goods, and was taxed there again ten years later. In the 1587 Lay Subsidy Roll for Malmesbury borough in the Public Record Office is and entry for "Wilms Pene." William was deceased by 1588, and his widow and six children, in 1590, were living in Minety with the elder William Penne.
