At the time of the Domesday Survey, Thurstan (or Thurstine, as he is more commonly written), a Norman, held five hides of land in Draiton, in co. Stafford. Which Thurstine, it is said came into England with the Conqueror; and was the paternal ancestor of the several families of the name Basset in England.
