• Background Information. 574 The Hathaways of Dartmouth trace their ancestry back to Arthur Hathaway who married Sarah Cooke, the daughter of John Cooke. The marriage of Arthur and Sarah, which took place 20 Nov 1652, is the first reliable documented evidence of Arthur Hathaway's presence in Plymouth colony.
He was noted in records when in 1634 an order was given to collect taxes from Arthur Hathaway and "Segeant" Shaw in the region yet to become Dartmouth. Dartmouth was not constituted until after 1664. He also was recorded as a memeber of the grand jury in 1856. Another record reflects that he was elected to eight terms as "celect"-man. In 1671, he was appointed a magistrate.
Arthur Hathaway's will was dated Feb. 1709/10, and presented to the court on Feb 1710/1. The witnesses were John Cannon, Jr., Isaac Howland and Jonathan Delano. It states that he "was very weak of body, but of perfect mind and memory." He gave his wife, Sarah Cooke, the income of certain estate and a legacy of five shilling to each of his children whom he named as Thomas, Jonathan, Mary Hammond, Lydia Sisson and Hannah Cadman. To his son John, he gave his land in Dartmouth amd made John the executor of his will. The inventory of his estate was: one-half share of land, 200p Feather beds and bedding, 40p A Bible and other books, 5p Table linen, woolen, yarn and flax, 3 iron pots, 2 iron kettles, 1 brass kettle, 2 brass skillets, a warming pan, barrel of cider and 30 pounds of tobacco. The single debt due from his estate was to Dr. James Tallman for 4 pounds 4 shillings.
