• Background Information. 395 On 21 Jul 1717, Juan de la Candelaria, 25-year-old son of Francisco de la Candelaria and Francisca Montoya, native of New Mexico, petitioned to marry Juana Torres de la Candelaria, who was at least 22 years old, a native of New Mexico, of unknown parents, and not relted to the groom. They were married on 8 August 1717. The background of Juana Torres de la Candelaria remains a mystery, but the presence of Juan de Torres living near Francisco de la Candelaria's southern neighbor in 1715, and the fact that both of Francisco's sons, Juan and Bentura married Torres women, leads to speculation that Juana Torres is from the family of Juan Torres.
