Jacob Hockman (Sr.) was born at Ibersheim on the Rhine about 1694, was in Pennsylvania by 1726, and in Virginia by 1736. He died near Strasburg, Shenandoah County, Virginia in 1765.
The early Hackman/Hockman immigrants were all Mennonites from around Ibersheim, near Worms in the German Palatinate and were third and fourth generation descendants of Ulrich Hagmann, a Mennonite refugee from Canton Zurich, Switzerland who left there about 1660. He went first to Alsace and then to Ibersheim further down the Rhine. His widow was living there in 1683 with her children. Jacob Hagmann (Hockman) son of Johannes (Hans) was born at Ibersheim and died near present day Strasburg in early 1765. The name of his wife is unknown, but she may have been a Bowman.

A contingent of Mennonites from the Palatinate emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1776 and Jacob Hagman appears on the 1727 tax list (as Jacob Hogman) for the Conestoga region of Cherster County (the section that became Lancaster County in 1729). In February 1728, Jacob joined with over 140 other pioneers from that area (mostly Mennonites) to sign a naturalization petition drawn up by Martin Meily (1728 Mennonite Petition, Chester County Archives, West Chester, pennsylvania).

The earliest Hockman in the Shenandoah Valley was Jacob Hagmann, who appears with Christian Bowman on "Sandy Hook" on the North Fork of the Shenandoah near present day Strasburg, in February of 1737. He apparently joined with Bowman to buy land on the North Fork of the Shenandoah from William Russell. Russell had them summoned to Orange County Court in February 1737 because they owed him money. Jacob Hagmann and Bowman signed a note promising to pay. In May 1737, Russell deeded 675 acres to Bowman (Orange County Order Book 1, pp. 166, 170, 176; and Deed Book 2, pp. 1-5). This tract included virtually all of Sandy Hook, a large bend in the river near present day Strasburg in Shenandoah County, but at that time was included in Orange County.

By 1739, Jacob Hackman and his son, Johannes Hackman, and either a son or nephew, Jacob Hackman, Jr. signed a petition to form a new county, west of the Blue Ridge.
Jacob Hagmann, Sr. also signed a road petition, along with his sons, Johannes and Christian in February 1743 (Joyner, Vol. I, p. 57). Though no formal deed in his name was ever recorded, Jacob was listed on a 1750 rent roll as a landowner in the neighborhood of Strasburg (J. Estelle King, Landowners of 1750, Abstracts of Wills, Administrations, and Rent Rolls, Frederick County, Virginia, p. 58). All evidence indicates that Jacob lived on Sandy Hook and it can only be concluded that he had an arrangement with Christian Bowman in regard to land ownership.

On 27 January 1764, he wrote his will, apprently at the home of his son, Rudolph, in the town of Strasburg, requesting that his estate be equally divided between "his sons and daughters, ten in number." He did not name his children or his wife. The inventory of his estate was submitted to the Frederick County Court 8 May 1765, by Henry Funk. The will was probated 20 August 1764 (Frederick County Will Book 3, p. 297). His son Jacob refused to take the oath to administer the estate and Jacob Stover and Henry Funk were appointed executors. When he wrote his will in 1764, he mentioned that he had ten children, but named only his son Jacob to whom he had sold his land and whom he was appointing executor of his will. Jacob was to pay his brothers and sisters equally for their interest in the estate. Jacob Hockman, Sr. has to be the father of all the Hockman men on the Virginia frontier in the 1760s and 1770s, except for another Jacob Hockman, Jr. who died in 1759 (probably a nephew of Jacob Hockman, Sr.).

Jacob Hockman, Sr. had four daughters who no doubt married other pioneer settlers in Shenandoah County, but the identification of them is speculative at this point. Evidence indicates that the wife of Henry Funk of Strasburg (possibly Elizabeth) was a daughter of Jacob Hockman. There is evidence to suggest that the others were Mary, wife of Jacob Gochenauer and Barbara, wife of henry Gochenauer, but the fourth cannot be surmised at this point.
Jacob Hockman (he signed his will as Hagmann) was in Pennsylvania as early as 1726, when he appears on a Lancaster area tax list. He signed a naturalization petition in February, 1728 as Jacob Hagmann (this signature is identical to the one on Jacob's will in Virginia).
