A letter from Father Madariaga from Tomé on 1 Nov 1838 indicated that José Ygnacio Chaves lost his parents as a young man and had lived the home of his brother who acted as his second father. He grew up with with Manuela Chaves and engaged in carnal acts with her. As a result, she became pregnant.
Father Madariaga forwarded the proceedings to Durango. Bishop Zubiría stated that he was unable to grant a dispensation because it was beyond his authority. He ordered the denial sent to the priest in Tomé on 19 Jun 1839.
