John Wolcott, the grandfather of Henry, our American progenitor, was the son of John Wolcott, of Tolland, Somersetshire. The Subsidy Rolls and Wills supply evidence not preserved in the family diaries or parish records. The wife of John Wolcott and grand mother of Henry Wolcott is buried near the Tolland church, and the very old tomb next to hers may be her husband's, although the incription is rendered illegible by time and weather. John's will was dated 9 Feb 1571 and proved April 11, 1572. The family name was spelled Wolcot in both his (Henry's grandfather) will and his son John's (Henry's father) will.

The will of John Woolcott, of Tolland, dated 9 Feb 1571 and proved 11 Apr 1572, bequeaths "my soule to Almightie god my creator and to Lord Jesus Christ my redeemer and my bodie to Xtian buriall,' with bequests "to ye cathedrall churche of Welles," . . . "to John my sonne," . . . "to Alice my daughter" . . . "to Mary my daughter," . . . "to John Howe," . . . "to Agnes Meyn," . . . and "unto Agnes my wief," - appinting as overseer "Henry Woolcot and Roger Woolcot my brothers."
