Andrew and his family arrived in Philadelphia on 24 Sep 1737 from Rotterdam, Germany. The captain of the Virtuous Grace was John Bull. Andrew S(Z)umwald is listed as 39 years of age and originating from Niederauerbach, Bayern-Pfalz. Listed with him are Anna Margretha (Jacobs), Maria Elisabetha, age 6, Maria Susanna, age 3 and Anna Ottillia, age 1.

• He signed a will.
In the Name of God, Amen; I, Andrew Zomwald in the County of Frederick and Colony of Virginia, being weak in body but sound of memory, (Blessed by God) do this 20th day of October ANNO Domini One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty Four, make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following, that is to say:

First, I recommend and give my body to the ground and my soul to God.

Secondly, I give to my wife, Ann Regina Zomwald for her share a third part of all my estate as well deserved for all her trouble she had had with me in all my sickness and children with my first wife as well as hern. I say she is to have a third of all my land, cattles, household stuff, etc.

Thirdly, the two parts or third left, is to be divided in equal shares amongst the children as the other.

Fourthly, I make my wife, Ann Regina, sole Executrix and ordain her for that, in trust for the intents, purposes in this my will contained, as a mother ought to do to my children by my first wife as well as them got with her.

Fifth, If any of the children should be fit and grown up for to learn a trade such as the like the _______ shall be put to it with the will of their mother.

In witness whereof, I, Andrew Zomwald set my hand and seal the day and year above mentioned.

Signed, sealed and delivered as my last will and testament in the presence of George Weaver, Peter Spear and Martin Blake.

At a Court continued and held for Frederick County the 6th day of March, 1765, this last will and testament of Andrew Zomwald, deceased, was proved by oaths of George Weaver and Peter Speer, two of the witnesses there to and ordered to be recorded. Ann Regina, the Executrix therein named having refused to take upon herself the Execution thereof, Administration with the will annexed to the estate of the said Andrew Zomwald, deceased, and George Weaver, his securities entered into and acknowledged bond in the penalty of Four Hundred Pounds for his due and faithful execution thereof.

The European connection:

• The first recorded information was about my ancestor who was Daniel Zumwald and who was born in Switzerland around 1640. He became a brick maker and lived in Peterback and Weltersweiler. He married Veronica (no middle initial?). Their third child was:

• Johann Philipp Zumwald who was born in Weltersweiler 25 February 1670. He died prior to 15 March 1711 and is probably buried in Weltersweiler or Lohr/Alsace. He married Susanna Feller who died in Overaverbach after 17 February 1726. One of their children was the first to come to America and who was my ancestor. He was:

• Johan Welhelm Andrew Zumwald who came to America at age 39 arriving the 24th of September 1737 aboard the good ship "Virtuous Grace", John Bull, Master. The ship's manifest shows a total of 225 passengers but only males over 16 years of age are identified. It is assumed that his wife and three daughters accompanied him. The family settled in Pennsylvania in 1737, only one year after the William Penn family and the Indians had signed a treaty.
