• Background Information. 1511
Luis Gallegos came to the legal age of majority by 1602 and eventually moved to to Nombre de Dios where he is documented as a tax-paying citizen of that town in 14 Apr 1602. In this document Luis Gallegos de Terrazas gave Power of Attorney to Simó de Vargas Manchuca and Jun del Torro Vivero.

Luis again appears as a vecino of the Villa de Durango in a census record dated 1605 which states "Luis Gallegos, married, and sustains himself by occupation with a wagon. The two enteries that followed Luis were of Pedro Rodríguez, a muleteer, and Cristóbal de Rivera, owner of covered wagons from Mexico city. Luis's sister, Francisca Gallegos, a widow, is listed as a third person & owning an estancia for raising cattle.

Luis was living in the Valle de la Puana around 1612/3. The Valle de la Puana had originally been part of a grant given to Pedro de Quiroga in the late 1550s. At this time, the grant of land was at the edge of the Northern frontier of Nueva España. Among the first settlers of this area was Diego Borruel & his brother Juan Borruel de Luna, a son-in-law of Pedro Quroga. Luis's wife, Pascuala de Rueda, was the daughter of Juan Borruel and niece of Diego Borruel.
