Noted events in her life were:
• Background Information. 511 Doña Inés was a Tano Indian. She was likely the same Tano woman taken from New Mexico when the Castaño de Sosa left New Mexico in 1591. She returned with the Oñate expedition in 1598, and acted as a translator for Oñate. In 1626, she was described as "an acculturated Tano Indian woman whom they treat as Spanish woman."
She was the mother of Hernán Martín Serrano the Younger, and resided in Santa Fé with her son until the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Her son is another example of how, in New Mexico, a persons ethinic background did not define his social stutus or ability to raise in the ranks of the military. ~Parientes, La Herencia, Spring 2007
• Background Information. 1465 Doña Inéz, May 1626, was referred to as the mother of Hernán III Martín, el mozo, and described as "india mui ladina que se trato como española de nacion tana" which translates to :an acculturated Tano Indian woman who they treat as a Spanish woman" [AGN, México, Inquisición, t.356, f.314, 29 May 1626, Santa Fé]. The fact that Hernán III was know as "el mozo" or "the younger" is the main reason it is believed he was the son of "the elder" Hernán II Martín Serrano. Doña Inéz was idenified as the wife of Francisco "Pancho" Balón, and Idio Méxicano and Blacksmith living in Santa Fe [Inquisición t.304, f.187]. Balón was deceased by Mar 1631 [AGN, Inquisición,t.372, exp.16, f.8v].
