Benaventura most likely arrived in New Mexico when his brother Antonio arrived on July 2, 1697. He to New Mexico as a soldier and was stationed at the Santa Fé Presidio. He and his wife Rosa stayed in Santa Fé and raised 8 children.
He requested a land grant in the Chama jurisdiction. In his petition for this land, he stated that he had served his Majesty as a soldier of the Real Presidio de Santa Fé for twenty-three years and was asking to be granted some land for his services so he could better provide for his family, which consisted of his wife and eight children. This request was denied in a response dated 23 Jan 1734.

It was common for children to take their mother's family name if that family is more prominent or distinguished than the father's family. Since Benaventura's mother was given the title of Doña, it is likely that her family was the more prominent family.
The name Esquibel, Asqueta and Arana are all Basque in origin, suggesting a strong Basque lineage in the antecedents of Buenaventura de Esquibel.
