Francisco de Amaya Almazán was born in Mexico City, the son of Pedro de Almazán, who came from Salamanca to the capital city of New Spain. There he was in charge of metals at the royal mint until his death. His mother was Ynez de Anaya, also a native of Salamanca. One brother, Agustín, was an encomendero at the Alóndiga in the Valley of Mexico; another was an Augustinian priest who died in the Amilpas district of Mexico City; while a third had gone to the Philippines and had not been heard of since. Two sisters of his were María de Anaya, married and residing in Mexico City, and Ana María de Guzmán, wife of Baltasar de Viana of México City and mother of Fray Pedro de Viana, a Dominican.
