Juan Montes Vigil recorded his first testament at Zacatecas, Nueva Galicia, on October 2, 1682. He began by stating he was a native of Mexico City and a vecino of Zacatecas. He then named his parents as Juan Montes Vigil and Catalina de Herrera Cantillana, both deceased and both natives of the "reynos de Castilla" and vecinos of Mexico City.

Juan Montes Vigil named Nicolás Díaz Caballero as the executor of his estate and ordered that his natural son, Francisco Montes Vigil, age 16 more of less, be placed in the of Díaz Caballero, Francisco's uncle. He also stated that if he son died before coming of age to acquire the estate of his inheritance that everyting would go to his sister María de Herrera Cantillana. He also mentioned an orphan named Carlos Vigil, age 2 who being reared by Juan and his sister María. He placed the boy in the care of Díaz Caballero. It appears that María de Herrera Cantillana was married to Nicolás Díaz Caballeros.

In his second testament dated April 23 1683, Zacatecas, Juan Montes Vigil declared his was a merchant and a resident of Zacatecas, a native of Mexico City and the legitimate son of Juan Montes Vigil and Catalina de Cantillana, natives of "reynos de Castilla."

Juan Montes Vigil declared he was a single man and had never been married. He also declared that he had a natural son by a single woman and identified his son as Francisco Montes Vigil, 17 years old and married and veiled in the Catholic Church with María Jiménez.

"In the Villa of the Municipality of Siero, on 10 Feb 1609, before Señor Pedro Cote, Juez Ordinario in this said municipality in the state of the good men who serve the King, Our Lord, Bartololmé de Vigil, Regidor of this villa and court, appears to present the following petition:

Bartolomé de Vigil, vecino and perpetual Regidor of this Municipality of Siero, in the name of and as I am caretaker of the person and possessions of Juan Montes Vigil, my nephew, a vecino and native of the parish of San Martino de Siero of this municipality and resident of Madrid in the court of His Majesty. I say that the said, my charge, wishes to travel to the Indies in Nueva España and other provinces of His Majesty, and that whatever place he has been he has been treated as a well-known hidalgo of a manor known by its appointed and painted shield of arms, as he is a descendant by direct and legitimate lineage of the House and Manor of Vigil which is of the referred to quality and one of the ancient and principal Houses and Manors of this municipality and principality, and because he is of the said House and Manor. His legitimate father, Juan Montes Vigil and legitimate grandfather, Lucas Montes Vixil, are of the said House and Manor, and likewise he needs to provide information stating he is free of all Moorish and Jewish race, nor of those burned at the stake, nor of those repentant before the Holy Office and that he is a young, free man, and is not bound by the order of matrimony, nor religious order. Regarding all that, I ask and entreat your favor to receive from me the said information from the witnesses that I present before your grace, presenting and confirming that he is the legitimate son of Juan Montes Vixil and María de Vijil, his legitmate wife, his parents who together were married and veiled in facie eclesie. He is the legitimate grandson of Lucas Montes Vixil and his wife, Isabel de Vigil who were married and veiled in facie clesie, and they had and procreated Juan Montes Vixil, his father. He is the legitimate grandson through his mother of Francisco de Vigil de San Martino and his legitimate wife, Catalina de Argüelles, who were married and veiled with each other in facie eclesie, and during their marriage they had as their daughter the said mother (of Juan Montes Vigil, the younger).

The Procurator of this municipality has received this infomation as ordered. I ask and entreat your favor to provide me with a signed copyand in public form and manner that interposes your authority and judicial decree to the document for which I am obligated to pay for the legal accounts. The witnesses that were presented to confirm the information in Bartolomé de Vigil's petition were: Martín García, age 70, vecino de lagar de Aveno in the parish of San Martino in the Municipality of Siero; Juan de Careses, known as "el Martil," age 60, vecino de lugar de Careses; Juan González, age 64, vecino de lugar de Taladillo in the Municipality of Siero; and Juan Fernández del Camino, age 70 more or less, vecino de la Villa de Siero. The statements of these were taken in the presence of Bernabé Vijil. scribe.

Juan Montes Vigil came to New Spain as the Criado of Don Jacinto de Olmos on 20 Jun 1611. He is described as tall and white.

Juan married Catalina Herrera on 21 Jun 1619 in Zacatecas, Nueva Galicia, Nueva España ¹⁵⁷⁰.^,1571 (Catalina Herrera was born about 1600 in Castilla, España, Iberia and died before 1683.)
