Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford and Essex, Constable of England, grandson and heir, being son and heir of Humphrey de Bohun and his 1^st wife, Eleanor de Braose, was born about 1249. The King took his homage and he had livery of his mother's lands 8 Nov 1270. On 14 Jan 1270/1, he had a grant of 40 marks a year as long as he remained in the King's service. During his grandfather's life, 9 Sep 1275, he was his deputy in the constableship of England. He had livery of his grandfather's lands, 26 October, and of the purparty of Eve de Braose his grandmother, 12 Nov 1275.

Humphrey was present when judgment was given against Llywellyn, 12 & 17 Nov 1276, and he was going to the marches of Wales on the King's affairs. On 2 Jan 1277/8, he had a protection on going on pilgrimage to Santiago. In 1282, he was ordered to place himself under the Earl of Gloucester and Hertford in Wales, and allowed to remain in Brecknock, the office of Constable of England to be performed by his uncle [of the half blood], John de Bohun. On 10 May 1285, he was going beyond seas, and on 5 Feb 1286/7, he was staying in Wales by the King's command.

On 6 Nov 1287, he was granted at pleasure lands in Carmartben. In 1289, he was fighting against the Earl of Gloucester in respect of the boundaries of their domains, but the two were reconciled. On 19 Feb 1291/2, his liberty of Brecknock was taken away, but restored, 13 Jul 1292. In 1297, he conducted the Princess Elizabeth and her husband John, Count of Holland, on their journey from England. At the so-called "Parliament" which met at Salisbury, 24 Feb 1296/7, occurred the famous passage between the King and the Earls of Norfolk and Hereford. When the King was defied, the two Earls, one as Marshal and the other as Constable, refusing to do service in Gascony unless the King were present. They were deprived of their offices. Finally they came to London and practically dictated their terms to the king. The Earl of Hereford served in Scotland in 1298.

Humphrey married, 1275, Maud de Fiennes, the daughter of Enguerrand de Fiennes, Seigneur de Fiennes, in Guisnes by Isobel, sister of Jacques, Seigneur de Conde, Bailleul et Moriammez in Hainault, daughter of Nicholas I, Seigneur de Conde, by Isobel, Dame of Morialme, and grandaughter of Guillaume de Fiennes, by Agnes de Dammartin, daughter of Alberic (II), comté de Dammartin. She predeceased him, and was buried at Walden in Essex. He died at Pleshey, 31 Dec 1298, and was also buried at Walden.
