• Diligencia Matrimonial. 248
1718, Mar. 7, Bernalillo. Antonio de Chaves of Atrisco, native of New Mexico, widowed of Doña María Magdalena Montaño, son of Captain Don Fernando Durán y Cháves and Doña Lucia Hurtado, and Doña Antonia Baca (15) of Bernalillo, parents unknown. Groom requests dispensation from 3rd degree of consanguinity, and 2nd of affinity from illicit copula with bride's relative, latter also related to him in 4th degree. Reasons for dispensations: Bride is very poor and in danger of losing her honor if her relatives died, the paucity of equal status in "this miserable kingdom" and groom's own charity for helping her besides his fondness. Dispensation has been granted with penalties: Groom must labor manually one day a week for 4 months at the Parish Church, and begging alms for the Poor Souls; he has to donate 1000 adobes for the Albuquerque Church and the same for the Bernalillo cemetery, and personally must make 100 adobes for the Albuquerque Church and another 100 for the one in Bernalillo, working personally for one whole week at each place, so that other will be deterred from similar sinful commissions.
Witnesses: Juan de Dios Martín, Alburquerque notary; Francisco Xavier Benavides (26), and Sebastian Antonio Maldonado (42), both married. José de Quintana, Bernalillo notary; Cristóbal Arellano (44), Diego Montoya (20), both married. Pair married March 23, 1718, with nuptial blessing on April 24, 1718; witnesses for both occasions being Don Miguel de San Juan and Isabel Montoya, and Ignacio de Aragón.
