• Background Information. 252,274 Juan Pérez de Bustillo and his family were a members of Don de Oñate party that came to settle New Mexico in 1598. He was listed as 40 years old, the son of Simón Pérez and a native of Mexico City. He was described as small in stature, gray-bearded and having a wart on the left side of his face. With him came his wife, two sons and seven daughters. One son, Simón, was listed as a soldier.
Juan's wife was María de la Cruz. Both Juan and his wife were livng in 1626. Besides Simón, they had another son named Diego. Diego adopted the surname of Santa Crus. Their known daughters were Ana, fifty in 1631 and married to Asencio de Arechuleta; Yumar, who was forty in 1631, and married to Antonio Baca; Beatriz, who was thirty-eight in 1631 and married to Alonso Varela.

Oñate lead a party into Kansas to search for the legendary Gran Quivara. Upon his return, he found that 400 colonists had deserted San Gabriel, the Spanish colony begun by the Oñate party. Those who remained were considered loyalists, and stayed on to raise their families in New Mexico. Juan Pérez was among the Loyalists who stayed in New Mexico.
