• Background Information. 900 Pierre, youngest son of Louis "le Gros," King of France, married Elizabeth de Courtenay, daughter of Renauld. From this marriage descended the Courtenay family in France. The estates of Elizabeth's father were given to Pierre and Elizabeth, when her father, Renauld, left France for England. Pierre and his children took the name of Courtenay.
