Sir Richard Cancefield Lord of Cancefield and Lancaster

William, son of Michael le Fleming, succeeded, who was in turn followed by another Michael, who appears to have died young, leaving a widow, Alina, but no issue. The manor passed to the next heir, Alice, sister of Michael le Fleming, who conveyed it in marriage to Sir Richard Cancefield, Knight, lord of Cancefield and Farlton. She survived her husband, and her name occurs during her widowhood as confirming a grant of lands to the Abbey of Cockersand. The issue of the marriage was two sons, John and William, and a daughter Agnes.

John, the eldest son, married, but died childless. The inheritance went to his younger brother William, who was a minor at the time and a ward of the abbot of Furness, who in right of his wardship entered into possession of the manor. The feeling of hostility entertained by the lords of Aldingham towards the fraternity at Furness, which had slumbered for a time, was manifested with renewed vigor by the William. It is recorded that William Cancefield with the aide of several friends, ejected the representative of the abbot from the possession of his lands. Due to this, the sheriff was directed to seize the manor and deliver it into the custody of the abbot until the offender should be of age. William reached an age of majority in 1292, in which year he made proof of his titled to the various manorial rights. He married, yet died without issue. His estates passed to his sister who was married to Robert de Haryngton, who in his wife's right, became the lord of Aldingham.

The manor of Cantsfield properly so called, of which Thurland was held, belonged to a family using the local name, but little is known of its history. About the middle of the 13th century Sir Richard de Cansfield married Aline Fleming and so acquired the manor of Aldingham. They had three children, John, William and Agnes, the last ultimately succeeding. She married Robert de Harrington, and their son John inherited Cantsfield and Aldingham. [Furness Couch. (Chet. Soc.), 84; In 1285 the heir of Sir Richard de Cansfield held the six plough-lands in Cantsfield and Farleton of the lord of Hornby by knight's service; Lancs. Inq. and Extents, i, 262. John de Harrington held a moiety of the manor of Cantsfield in 1319; ibid, ii, 37] The lordship thus passed to the Harringtons of Aldingham.

John de Haverington or Harington, son and heir of Sir Robert Haverington, of Harrington in Cumberland and his wife, Agnes, and eventually heir of Aline, wife of Richard de Cansfield, heiress of the family of Furness or Fleming of Muchland in Furness.

Sir John de Cantsfield was knighted between the years 1248-1254 (Furness Coucher, pp. 489-490), and died before 1265, leaving issue his son and heir, Sir Richard de Cantsfield, who married Alice, sister and heir of Robert le Flemyng, which Robert, after the death of his brother Michael by drowning in the river Leven, had succeeded to the estates of his father, Sir William le Fleming of Furness, lord of Aldingham. Sir Richard died circa 1269, John, his son and heir being then under age. John, son of Richard, died in 1289 and was succeed by his brother Sir William de Cantsfield. Sir William died without issue 27 May 1293, his sister Agnes, wife of Sir Robert de Harington, Knight, being his heir.
