From Wikipedia: Guillaume V de Montferrat (Guglielmo Monferrato), also known under the name of William the elder to distinguish it from his eldest son, William Long Sword, was Marquis of Montferrat from 1136 to his death in 1191. William is the only son of the Marquis Rénier I and his wife Gisčle, daughter of William I, Earl of Burgundy and widow of Count Humbert II of Savoy . He is likely to be one of his parents' youngest children, as he was still fighting in 1187.

He is described by Acerbo Morena as being stocky and of medium height, a hare face and almost white hair. He is eloquent, intelligent, often cheerful without being extravagant. His kinship is impressive: nephew of Pope Calixtus II, half-brother of Amedee III of Savoy, brother-in-law of Louis VI of France (by his half-sister Adele of Savoy) and cousin of Alfonso VII of Castile.

William married Judith de Babenberg), daughter of Leopold III of Austria and Agnes of Franconia, sometime before March 28, 1133. She was probably fifteen at the time. She died after 1178. They had five sons four of whom played leading roles in the affairs of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the Byzantine Empire and three girls:

• William Long Sword, Earl of Jaffa and d'Ascalon, father of King Baldwin V of Jerusalem
• Conrad, king of Jerusalem
• Boniface, Marquis of Montferrat and founder of the kingdom of Thessalonique
• Frederick, who entered the orders becomes bishop of Alba
Rénier, married in the imperial family of Byzantium.
• Agnčs, married to Guy Guerra III Guidi, Count of Casentino. This marriage is canceled around 1180 because of the lack of child, and Agnčs enters the convent of Santa Maria di Rocca delle Donne.
• Adelasia or Alasia or Azalais of Montferrat, married around 1182 to Manfred II of Saluces. She was regent on behalf of her grandson Manfred III.
• A girl whose first name is unknown, married to Albert, Marquis of Malaspina.

The troubadour Raimbaut de Vaqueiras, in his Vida speaks of another girl, Beatrice. This Beatrice could also be the wife of Guigues V d'Albon, last of dauphins de Viennese.

Guglielmo married Judith von Babenberg, daughter of Leopold von Babenberg Markgraf of Austria and Agnes of Germany. (Judith von Babenberg died after 1178.)
