• Background Information. 776 Hugh de Vernon was the son of William de Vernon and the grandson of Richard de Vernon who came to England with William the Conqueror. He was living in 1119, was also Lord of Northwyk, and with Richard, Earl of Chester, likewise a great benefactor to the abbey of St. Weburgh. He married the daughter and heir of Reginald de Baillot (or Badgioll), Lord of Erdewick and Helgrave; by whom he had issue: Warine de Vernon, fourth Baron of Shipbroke, living in the regign of Henry III
