Richard de Malebiche

Lands in Hawnby and in Dale were granted by Roger de Mowbray to Hugh Malbis or Malebiche early in the 12th century. [Kirkby's Inq. (Surt. Soc.), 97 (York Corporation Papers).] Hugh had two sons, Hugh and William, [Rievaulx Chartul. (Surt. Soc.), 42 n] of whom the former died without issue. [Guisbro' Chartul. (Surt. Soc.), ii, 8 n] William succeeded to his father's lands, but by an agreement confirmed in 1201 assigned Hawnby, Scawton and Dale [Ibid] to his cousin Richard Malebiche, [Cal. Rot. Chart. 1199'961216 (Rec. Com.), 92] son of William Malebiche of Acaster. [He is sometimes made a third son of Hugh (Guisbro' Chartul. [Surt. Soc.], ii, 61 n.), but in a charter granted by him to Rievaulx he speaks of Hugh as his uncle (Rievaulx Chartul. [Surt. Soc.], 214).]

In 1190 Richard Malebiche was a leader in the massacre of the Jews of York. [Yorks. Arch. Journ. iii, 167] His lands were forfeited in consequence, and ten years later he paid four palfreys, two hawks and two greyhounds for seisin of Hawnby, Dale and other places which he had before he was disseised. [Pipe R. 2 John, m. 8] He made an agreement in the next year with the Abbot of Rievaulx to settle the boundaries between their estates. [Yorks. Fines, John (Surt. Soc.), 7.] In 1206 Robert Luttrington and Constance his wife, widow of the younger Hugh Malebiche, released her claim to dower in Hawnby in return for rents in Murton. [Ibid. 108]

Richard Malebiche had a son John, [Rievaulx Chartul. (Surt. Soc.), 211; Plac. Abbrev. (Rec. Com.), 87.] who had succeeded him before 1214. [Pipe R. 16 John, m. 8a. Amice sister of Hugh Malebiche and her husband Stephen de Blaby claimed Hawnby against him. This strengthens the evidence that his father Richard was really the nephew of the elder Hugh (Guisbro' Chartul. [Surt. Soc.], ii, 8 n.).] John was succeeded by a son and heir William, [Guisbro' Chartul. (Surt. Soc.), ii, 61 n.; Cal. Chart. R. 1226'9657, p. 371.] whose heir seems to have been another Richard.

In the 12th and 13th centuries part of this manor seems to have been held by the Malebiche family. Hugh Malebiche, donor of land in this parish to Byland Abbey [Burton, Mon. Ebor. 334] and Guisborough Priory, [Guisbro' Chartul. (Surt. Soc.), ii, 8, 10] was brother of William Malebiche, whose son Richard [Ibid. Another pedigree, however, makes Richard son of a Hugh Malebiche (ibid. 60'961).] in 1200 gave £100, besides goshawks, greyhounds and palfreys, to recover lands in Marton and elsewhere which he had forfeited by his attack on the Jews of York [Rot. de Oblatis et Fin. (Rec. Com.), 41; Pipe R. 2 John, m. 8 d. Peter de Brus was Richard's chief surety on this occasion].

Richard Malebisse was described by Maud countess of Warwick and her sister Agnes de Percy as their nephew. John Malebisse, son of Richard son of William, referred to Emma de Percy, his grandmother in a charter to St. Mary's York [Guisborough Chartulary, ii, 61n].
