Sir Bertram de Bulmer, who appears to have been the chief of the family, was a powerful baron and the owner of vast lands in Yorkshire and Durham. He stood high in the royal favour, and held, for many years, in the reigns of Henry I. and Stephen, the important and onerous office of sheriff of Yorkshire. Sir Bertram left an only daughter and heiress, Emma, who married Geoffrey de Neville, and these lands, with the castles of Sheriff Hutton and Branspeth, passed to that family.

Bertram de Bumer made a gift to Marton priory was confirmed by his grandson, son of Emma de Bulmer, Henry de Neville. This consited of 30 acres of land in Burnsall and Thorpe in Crave and pasture in those places for 300 sheep and 30 cows [E.Y.C., ii, no.784] Bertram's daughter, Emma, married Geoffrey de Neville of Burreth, co. Lincoln.

Bertram had tenure of 4 fees of the fee of Fossard, so it is likely that Bertram de Bulmer married Emma, daughter of Robert Fossard. When Stephen de Meinil I renewed the gift made by his father of the town of Myton-on-Swae in St. Mary's York, the witnesses included Bertram the sheriff (1130-1135, 1154-1163) and Robert (Fossard)
brother of the sheriff. [Mon. Angel., iii, 558, n.40] In 1167, one year after Beltram's death, Welburn was in the possession Emma Fossard. [Pipe. R., 13 Hen. II, p. 97] Other land that had belonged to the fee of Fossard was later in the hands of Beltram's daughter Emma's Neville descendants. [Testa, 363b; Cf. Kirkby's Quest, 189; Red Bk., 734] From records of land holdings, we can ascertain that Bertram had two younger brothers, Stephen and Ralph, and a sister Sibil.

Geoffrey de Neville married, before Michalmas 1176, Emma, daughter of Bertram of Bulmer and his wife Emma, daughter of Robert Fossard. Geoffrey was dead by Michaelmas 1193, and Emma, by 1208.

Emma was the daughter of Betram de Bulmer, and possibly Emma, daughter of Robert Fossard. This was Emma's second marriage, before being the wife of Geoffrey de Valoignes, who died in 1169. Emma was also the heir of her brother William and the granddaughter Ansketil de Bulmer, who was steward of Robert Fossard. Ansketil de Bulmer may have been married to the heiress of Piers de Humez of Brancepeth.
