• Background Information. 141 Ralph Basset, son and heir of Ralph Basset of Drayton, Stafford, and of Colston Basset, Notts, was summoned to Parliament, 24 Dec 1264. Ralph married Margaret, daughter of Roger de Somery of Dudley, Worcester by his first wife, to whom Margaret was coheir of Nicole, daughter and coheir of William d'Aubigny, Earl of Arundel.
Ralph died 4 Aug 1265 while fighting at the battle of Evesham against the King. His widow and son were about to retain his estates since Margaret's father had found on the Kings side at the same battle. ~Cokayne's Complete Peerage, 2nd Edition, (Basset), Vol. II, p.1
