Robert
, Count of Meulan, 1st son and heir of Waleran and his 2nd wife Agnes Montofort, was born probably about 1142. Robert succeeded to the comté de Meulan and the Norman baronies, also to Sturminster and other small English estates inherited by his father, but not the Earldom of Worcester or the city of Worcester. In 1173, he adhered to the young King Henry in his revolt against Henry II, but was reconciled to the King, since he witnessed the treaty of Falaise between the Kings of England and Scotland in Aug. 1175.

Holding lands in both in France and Normandy, the conflict between Philip Augustus and the English Kings placed him in a difficult position, and ultimately brought about Robert's ruin. In 1188, when Philip took Vendome, he captured sixty-two knights sent by the Count of Meulan to assist the defense. On 20 Mar 1190, he witnessed, at Rouen, a charter of Richard I for Canterbury. In 1191, he was excommunicated on account of the part he had taken against the chancellor, Longchamp. In 1193, he adhered to Philip, and in 1194, Richard captured the castle of Beaumont. He changed sides again, and was caught between King John, Philip Augustus of France and his son Piers. In the wars between England and France, he lost the comté de Meulan, his great Norman lordships and even his English land.

Robert married, about 1165, Maud, daughter and coheir of Rainald or Reynold de Dunstanville, Earl of Cornwall (also the natural son of Henry I), by Beatrix, daughter and heir of William Fitz Richard. Robert died 21 Sep, abt. 1207.
