• Background Information. 917 Sir William Tunstall, in 1373, obtained a grand of free warren in Tunstal, Cancefield, Burgh in Lonsdale, Leeke and Norton [Tol. chart. 47 Edw. III, n.14]. It was Sir William's son, Sir Thomas, who appears to have built the castle of Thurland, in the valley of Lune, which early in the fifteenth century he obtained a license to embattle.

• Background Information. 755 William, son and heir of John de Tunstall was a minor in 1315, when his wardship, was claimed by John, son of Robert de Harrington. William came into possession of the manor by 1328, and his son William was in possession in 1359. The younger William added the manors of Over Burrow, Nether Burrow and part of Leck to the family estates. This William is probably the William de Tunstall who was a knight of the shire in 1386 and died in 1387.
