Roger de Toeni, the first, stlyed also de Conches, joined his father in the castle of Tillières in 1013/14, which would mean he must have been born about 990. He was a banner-bearer for all of Normandy, according William Jumièges, [p. 157] and Orderic [Orderic, vol. ii, p. 401]. He attested to a charter of Robert I for St. Wandrille in 1031/31, and about 1035, he founded the abbey of Châtillion or Conches. He was a benefactor to the abbey of l'Estrée and confirmed a gift to the abbey of Lire (founded by his son-in-law, William Fitz Osbern, 1st Earl of Hereford), and witnessed a charter for Jumiéges.
While Duke Robert of Normandy was away on a pligrimage, Roger de Toeni went to Spain and distinguished himself in fighting "the infidels." When he returned to Normandy, he was furious to learn that the bastard, William, son of Duke Robert had succeeded his father in the Duchy. He rebelled and ravaged the lands of his neighbors, especially those of Humphrey de Vieilles, whose son, Robert de Beaumont, defended his father. In the battle that followed, Roger de Toeni and his two sons were slain.
Due to his time in España, he was sometimes styled "Roger of Spain" [Orderic, vol.i. p. 18; vol iii. p. 338] or "Roger the Spaniard." He is said to have married a Spanish woman and lived there for fifteen years. Because of the treachery of the natives, he lost most of his men, left Spain and returned to Normandy. Roger's feats in Spain are recorded by Ademar, who calls him simply Roger, and does not say how long he stayed there. No other Roger de Toeni is know to have been living at the time of the stories about Roger in Spain.
Roger married, perhaps as his second wife, Godeheut, died probably in 1038/39, and was bured 31 May 1038/39 at Conches. Roger, son of Count Roduld, married in Spain, Stephanie, sister of Raymond Berenger who later married Garsias, King of Spain [Rec. des Hist. de France, vol. x. p. 223]. This agrees with Ademar, that Roger married a daughter of the widowed Ermensede, Condessa de Barcelona, the mother of Raymond Berenger. If this is the same Roger de Toeni, he married Godeheut while his first wife was alive, and Stephanie married Garsias III, King of Navarre, while Roger was living.

Roger next married Stephanie de Barcelona, daughter of Ramón Borell III Conde de Barcelona and Ermensinde de Carcassone. (Stephanie de Barcelona was born about 1004 in Barcelona, Catalán and died about 1051.)
