William d'Aubigny, son and heir of his father of the same name who was a Norman from cotentin, and son of Maud, daughter of Roger le Bigod, was Earl of Sussex. His father had been Master Butler and he succeeded him in this office in 1139. He was born early in the reign of Henry I, and became Lord of the manor of Buckenham, Norfolk on the death of his father about 1139. He married, sometime before Christmas 1141, Adeliz, eldest daughter of Godefroi á la Barbe, duc de Lorraine Inférieure et comté de Brabant et Louvaine. Adeliz was the widow Herni I of France. With this marriage to the "Queen Dowager," he now held the Castle and Honor of Arundel, which had been settled on her in dower. This made William the Earl of Arundel.
About the same time his father died, he gave shelter to Empress Maud at Arundel Castle, but after that adhered to Stephen. He was influential in arranging the treaty of 1153 which enabled King Stephen to serve for life, and secured that Henry II would inherit the throne. Henry II confirmed William as the Earl of Arundel, the Castle of Arundel, and the honor of Arundel with a grant about 1155. In the grant he referred to as "William, Earl of Arundel," a name which he is most often referred to in documents from that time on.
King Henry II held William d'Aubigny in great esteem, and William was one of the ambassadors who went to Rome in 1163/4, and later to Saxony in 1168 at the event of the Princess' marriage to the Duke of Saxony. He was in command of the royal army in Aug 1173, in Normandy, against the King's rebellious sons, and on 29 Sep 1174, he assisted at the defeat of the Earl of Leicester, who, along with his Flemings, had invaded Suffolk.
William and Adeliz were married in 1138. Adeliz retired in 1150 to a nunnery at Afflighem, in South Brabant, where she died and was buried 23 Apr 1151, about age 48. William survived her for twenty-five more years and died 12 Oct 1176 at Waverley Abbey, Surrey and was buried with his father at Wymonham Priory, Norfolk.

(Adeliza de Louvain was born about 1103, died on 23 Apr 1151 in Afflighem, South Brabant, Lorraine 722 and was buried in 1151 in Nunnery at Afflighem, South Brabant, Lorraine 722.)
