• Background Information. 227 John de Neville had the custody of the forest between the bridges of Stamford and oxford for his life by the grant of his father, Hugh de Neville, who also held it for life. John made fine with the king for having the bailiwick by three hundred marcs, Jul 1234.

• Background Information. 141 John de Neville, son and heir of Hugh de Neville and his 1st wife, Joan de Cornhill. In 1234, before his father's death, he fined to have the bailiwick of the King's Forest in Oxon, Northants, Bucks, and Hunts for life, and, after his father's death, did homage, 21 July. On 21 October 1235 he was appointed Chief Forester and justice of the whole of the King's Forest through England. He was one of the English notables who sailed with Richard, Earl of Cornwall, for Palestine from Marseilles in 1240. After his return to England he was so rapacious and oppressive in the execution of his office that, upon evidence obtained by commission, he escaped prison only by a very heavy fine. He retired in disgrace to Wethersfield, where he died soon afterwards.
John de Neville married Hawise, daughter of Sir Robert de Courtenay, of Okehampton, Devon. He died shortly before 8 June 1246. His widow had writ for dower 22 August 1246, and married, as his 2nd wife and her 2nd husband, Sir John de Gatesden, who died before 17 October 1262. She died shortly before 8 Apr 1269.
