Walter de Lacy Lord of Meath, Ireland

Walter de Lacy, the son and heir, had his father's lands restored to him in 1189. He paid scutage in 1194 for King Richard's redemption from his Austrian prison, being assessed at the rate of £1 per fee on 51¼ fees. The Pipe Roll of 1198 reads, "Walter de Lacy renders account of 3.100 marks for having the king's good-will and seizin of his lands." Walter's Norman fief was as great as his English and possibly Irish lands together. When Normandy was severed from England, Lacy lost his Norman fief.

Walter was unsteady in his allegiance to King John and joined with his father-in-law and arrayed Meath, Ulster and Munster against the English King. John campaigned successfully against the rebels in Ireland, and Walter and Hugh de Lacy and the elder de Broase were banished. They went to France where it is said they took refuge in the monastery of St. Taurin at Evreux. The abbot interceded with King John on their behalf. Gratitude to the Abbot lead Walter and Hugh de Lacy to found a monastery of Foure in Ireland.

Walter paid a large fin in order to have his estates restored. Walter de Lacy from this time on showed loyalty to King John. After John died, Walter remains on good terms with Henry III. In 1219 and 1221, Lacy was sent by Henry III to Ireland to subdue his brother who was rebelling against the king.

Walter died in 1241. His two granddaughters, Matilda and Margaret were his heirs. Margaret de Lacy married John de Verdon. Matilda de Lacy married Peter de Geneva who died shortly after their marriage and she married a second time to Geoffrey de Geneville of Joinville, who by the right of his wife became the lord of Ludlow and the Irish castle of Trim. The granddaughter of Geoffrey and Matilda married Roger de Mortimer.

Walter married Margery de Braose, daughter of William de Braose Lord Brecknock, Baron of Braiose and Maud de St. Valéry Lady of la Haie. (Margery de Braose was born about 1177 in Abergavenny, Brecknock, Wales, died after 1255 and was buried in Priory Church, Holme Lacy. Herefordshire, England ¹⁷¹.)
