• Background Information. 641 William Peck was on of the founders of the New Haven colony in the spring of 1638. With his wife, Elizabeth, and his son, Jeremiah, he emigrated from England to this country, probably in the company of Governor Eaton, Rev. John Davenport, and others in the ship Hector, arriving at Boston on 26 Jun 1637. This group was mainly from London, where Mr. Davenport had been a celebrated minister, and consisted of many wealthy merchants, and others of great respectability from London, as well as farmers from Yorkshire, Hertforshire and Kent. They surrered from the intolerance and persecution of Archibishop Land during the reign of Charles I, and they hoped to emigrate to where they could enjoy both civil and religious freedom.
We know from the date of his death that he most likely was born in 1601, probably in or near London. He married about 1622, and his son, Jeremiah was his only child at the time of his emigration.
William Peck was on of the original proprietors of New Haven, and his signature is on the fundamental Agreement or Constitution of Connecticut, dated 4 Jun 1639. He was admitted freeman of the colony, 20 Oct 1640. He was a merchant by occupation and a trustee, treasure and general business agent of the Colony Collegiate School. His name is generally prefixed with "Mr.," which at the time was a sign of respect and distinction. From 1659 until his death, he was deacon of the church in New Haven.
His wife, Elizabeth, died 5 Dec 1683, and he later married Sarah, the widown of William Holt. He died at the age of 93 on 4 Oct 1694. His grave is in the part of the old burial ground which was covered by the Center Church in New Haven.
