• Background Information. 1036 Nichola, daughter of William de Hemingford, was granted in marriage by Henry II to Henry II's servant William Ruffus. William Ruffus and Nichola had three daughters: Emma, who married Bartholomew de Legh; Alice who married Ralph de Tuberville; and Isabel who married Berengar le Moyne. By 1242/3, Emma de Legh held Hemingford and Yelling three fees.

• Background Information. 1376 William, Chamberlain to Henry II, had two brothers, Herbert Ruffus, Lord of Walesale, and Richard Ruffus, Chamberlain to Henry Duke of Saxony. As well as being the Chamberlain to Henry II, William Ruffus was also justice of Eyre & the Sheriff of Surry in 1191 and of Buckingham in 1193.
