• Background Information. 1091 Hywel Dda ruled over a large part of Wales between 943 and 950. His grandfather was Rhodri Mawr and his father was Cadell, ruler of Seisyllwg. When his father Cadell died in about 911, he inherited half of his father's lands. His brother, Clydog died in 920, and the other half went to Hywel.
Hywel married Elen, the heiress of Llywarch ap Hyfaidd, king of Dyfed. Hywel's kingdom remained in the hands of their decendants for generations.
Hywel extended his control over Gwynedd and Powys after the leaders of both, Idwal ab Anarawd and his bother Elisedd were killed in a battle against the English in 942. This gave him authority over most of Wales, and it is believed that he played a part in the complilation of written Welsh Laws during his reign.
