Walter The Deacon
General Notes:
K. S. B. Keats-Rohan, Domesday Descendants, Vol. II, Walter Diaconus, p. 454
Feudal baron (2nd class) of what became known as Little Easton, Essex. Domesday tenant-in-chief in Suffolk & Essex.
Information about this person:
• From Gen-Medieval Archives: Hastings . 193 From: Kay Allen AG <allenk@pacbell.net> Subject: Hastings Pt. IIB Date: Thu, 01 Mar 2001 12:00:55 -0800
But then Moriarty ran across "The Barony of Little Easton and the Family of Hastings", L. Landon, Esq. in Essex Archaeological Society Transactions, XIX(1930):174 etseq. So he wrote a follow-up article which was reprinted in the English Origins of New England Families 3:47 etseq.
In 1128, Henry I gave notice that Robert fitzWalter de Windsor had given his Tedric lands to his son, William fitz Robert (Cal Chart. R. II, 137).
In the previous post, I gave the issue of Walter the Deacon, among which was a sister Edith.
"Maurice de Windsor (brother of Robert fitzWalter...) and Edith his wife, gave to Wix, as a part of her inheritance, the isle of Siricheseie and the tithes of the lordship of Purle (Purleigh), excepting an acre of corn. an acre of oats, a lamb and a fleece ca 1130 (Cat. of Anct. Deeds A 8923)."
This Edith was then the dtr. of Walter the Deacon.
It also appears that William Fitz Robert alias William fitz Robert de Hastings called her siblings his uncles when he, as their overlord, confirmed their various grants.
William fitz Robert had a wife Hawise, who apparently remarried Gilbert de Pinckney, and had a son Robert.
In 1181, Hawise married, as her third husband, another William fitzRobert.
William fitz Robert and Hawise had sons, Robert fitz William, Alexander, John, and Ralph, and a daughter, Beatrice, who married Gilbert Carbonel and William de Goldingham.
William fitz Robert had an uncle Alexander de Wix, brother of Edith. This Alexander gave to Ralph fitz William de Hastings the fee of Wix.
Robert married, after 1169, Maud de Flamville. Moriarty then goes on to say that Dr. Round's statement that Robert de Hastings married the daughter and heiress of William fitz Robert de Hastings is an error.
Both Hawise and Maud are alive in 1219, both holding dower in Bilston in Wix, Essex.
Apparently, Hawise wa a de Guerres. In his Notebook XIV, at the NEHGS, Moriarty gives the following pedigree:
Richard de Guerche of Halstead, Essex, 1086
Richard d, bef. 1130 | | Hawise
Moriarty feels that the wife of Robert fitzWalter de Windsor or de Hastings also married a sister of Edith's.
But he also says there is another possibility, that Robert fiz Walter was not de de Windsor but fitz Walter fitz Tedric, otherwise Robert son of Walter the Deacon, and he married a sister of Maurice de Windsor.
So the beat goes on with the filiation of the first Robert fitz Walter being cast into doubt.
And to complicate matters, there is another article, "Hastings of Little Easton", by J.A.C. Smith in Essex Archaeological Society Transactions, 3rd Series, 2::i:101,I have not read this article. If anyone who might have access could find it and give a precis, I would be most grateful.
