• Background Information. 141 Thomas de Berkeley, feudal Lord of Berkeley, was his older brother's (Robert de Berkely) heir. He is sometimes referred to as "Thomas the Observer of Temporiser." He was born around 1170, and received the livery of his families estates about 1223. He married sometime around 1217, Joan, daughter of Sir Ralph de Somery, of Dudley, Worcester, and his wife Margaret, sister of William Marshal, earl of Pembroke, and the daughter of John Marshal. Thomas died 29 Nov 1243, at about age 73 years, and he was buried at St. Augustine's. Joan, his widow, was still alive in 1273/4.

Thomas married Joan de Somery, daughter of Ralph de Somery Baron of Dudley and Margaret Marshall.277 (Joan de Somery was born about 1191 in Gloucester, England and died on 22 May 1276 in England.)
