• Background Information. 764 William's oldest son was likely Henry de Kellet whose name appears from 1204-1207 in the Pipe Rolls, but died without issue before 1211, at the time when Gilbert, the second son of William proffered 20 marks and a palfrey for livery of his inheritance [Pipe Rolls, p.78]. Gilbert died in 1236, leaving issue, William, his son and heir, who died in 1242; Alice, who married Henry de Croft, and Godith who married first Vivian Gernet, and secondly John de Biggings [Fine Roll Excerpts, I. pgs. 311, 389].

• Background Information. 995 Claughton in Lonsdale, a vill of one carucate, was held in thanage in the time of Henry II by Orm, son of Bernulf, by service of four shillings per annum. Orm was the father of William de Kellet who died in or before 1199. William left issue, Henry, who died s.p., and was succeeded by his brother Gilbert in 1211. Besides Henry and Gilbert, William had a son named William and a daughter named Godith. Gilbert died in 1236 and was the father of a William who died in 1242. Gilbert was also the father to two daughters, Alice de Kellet who married Henry de Croft; and Godith, the wife of Vivian Gernet. [Fine Roll Excerpts, Record Com., II, p. 389]
Upon the death of William, son of Gilbert de Kellet, in 1242, without issue, the manor passed in moieties to Roger de Croft, son and heir of Henry de Croft by his wife Alice de Kellet, and to William de Claughton, son of Godith, daughter of William de Kellet.
