• Background Information. 141 John Mautravers, was the son and heir of his father by the same name. He was 30 years and more at the time of his father's death. In April 1286, as John, son of John Mautravers, he had protection for three years while staying in England. In 1289, with his wife Eleanor, staying still in England, both left to appoint attorneys in Ireland. In March 1297 he had livery of his inheritance. He was summoned for military service, May 1297, against the Scots. He was again summoned, as a fideles of Ireland, in 1301 and in 1302, and 1314-1333. In 1316 and 1317 he was in Ireland, serving against Edward Bruce, and in February 1324/5 was summoned for service in Guienne.
Both this Sir John Mautravers and his son, also Sir John Mautravers, were both knighted, 22 May 1306, at the knighting of Prince Edward. He was a conservator of the peace in Dorset, 1307-1329. In May 1324 he was summoned to attend the Great Council at Westminster. He and his son had political differences. He supported Edward, while his son John was an adherent of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster.
Sir John married his first wife, in or before 1289, Eleanor, sister of Master Thomas de Gorges. She was living 1314. He married his second wife, Joan, widow of Nicholas de Percy, who died in 1324, and daughter and heir of Sir Walter Foliot and his wife Ada or Alda, daughter and heir of Sir Laurence de Samford of Melbury. This John was living 26 January 1340/1, but dead in June 1341.

• Background Information. 907 John Maltravers, father of another John Maltravers, was knighted with Edward, prince of Wales, on 12 May 1306. He was a conservator of the peace for Dorset in 1307, 1308, and 1314. He served in Scotland on various occasions between 1314 and 1322, and was summoned to go to Ireland in February 1317 to resist Edward Bruce, and again in 1325 for service, in Guienne. He was again summoned for service in Scotland in 1327 and 1331, and in 1338 had orders to guard his manor, near the sea against invasion. The statement that he was ever summoned to parliament appears to be inaccurate. He died between 7 Sept. 1342 and 2 July 1344, having married first Alianor before 1292, and second Joan, daughter of Sir Walter Foliot. John was his son by his first, wife. Dugdale confuses father and son.
