His parentage is confirmed by the undated charter under which "Joelis filii Aluredi" founded Barnstaple Priory [Dugdale Monasticon V, Barnstaple Priory, Devonshire, I, p. 197]. Domesday Book records "Iudichael of Totnes" holding numerous properties in Devonshire, and Froxton in Cornwall [Domesday Translation, Devonshire, XVII, pp. 306-12, Cornwall, VI, p. 357].
