• Background Information: 605 John Poulter, yeoman of Rayleigh, Essex, England never saw the British Colonies. He signed his will in Rayleigh on 18 Mar 1638/39. He died sometime before 30 Mar 1638/39, when the will was probated by his widow and executrix, Marie Poulter.
John Poulter's will gives us the only knowledge of the English origin of this family. To his mother, Marie, he left forty shillings "to buy her a ring for remembrance;" to his mother-in-law, Marie Pope, an annuity of twenty shilling for five years; to his aunt, Anne Hayward, and a like amount to a witness of the will William Brewster, twenty shilling. To each of his daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, he gave fifty pounds at the age of twenty-one or when they marry. To his son, John Poulter, he left fifty pounds to be given to him when he was twenty-one. The rest of his estate was left to his wife Marie Pope Poulter whom he designated as the guardian of their children.
